My painting

I am often asked what I want to express through my painting and how I would define my practice of this art. For thirty years now, I have chosen oil painting among all forms of fine arts as a mode of expression because of the beauty and variety of available pigments, as well as for the various possibilities that it offers - notably, the ability to play with the different drying times of the various layers of paint. For instance, the fourth or fifth layer enhances the beauty of the previous layers and allows for special effects such as the realistic reproduction of a vaporous cloud, a prism of light reflected on the water, etc.

My painting is first and foremost a permanent quest for aesthetics and beauty for beauty’s own sake. Painting shifts from being a means to a subject which aims to show the beauty of our surroundings, real or not, figurative or abstract. I cannot consider painting a picture which is not pleasant to look at. My aim is to show beauty through the treated subject. This is how my painting meets my spiritual quest for harmony. Beauty is present in each thing, it’s up to us to capture it; it’s up to me to express it the best I can on my canvas.

I started painting in a figurative style, then I shifted naturally towards abstract, and I was surprised to find in this style the same landmarks and the same criteria and harmonies as in figurative painting. Colour is also a fundamental principle of my art. Isn’t painting above all the art of colour? There is no other art in which colour plays such a central role. This is another reason why I adopted oil pigments.

The subjects come to me naturally, without any intellectual quest, but rather through visions and flashes which I don’t try to understand. Beauty is everywhere. Every subject is worth painting. My painting is not intellectual, how could it be? It appeals to the heart and the eye of the spectator and it must take him on a journey. The call to the senses and the sensuality of painting cannot be excluded. I try to reproduce my visions faithfully on the canvas, however I’m not opposed to special personalized orders including requests regarding for instance colour range, format, subject or harmony with interior design. I consider communication between the artist and the spectator not only essential, but also a source of enrichment for my painting. My pictures are not meant to be looked at rapidly in a museum. They must rather live with the time, change with the light, the time of day and the atmosphere of a room.

When I’m not satisfied with a painting, I don’t hesitate to call myself into question; if the result is not satisfying, it means that I’m not in harmony with the beauty that surrounds me. Is it my hand or my spirit that has failed? It makes no difference; both physical and spiritual concepts are conductors.

To those who honour me by admiring my paintings, I’d like to say: don’t look for answers to your questions, but let yourself be guided by the painting and if the guide is not a good one, leave it. There is no need for intellectual explanation. Why add another vector of communication to the painting when painting is already an independent and autonomous language? This is also one of the purposes of the quest for beauty: to reach the greatest number of people at once.

These few lines should be sufficient to inform those who want to know more about my painting, but do not replace the experience of seeing the pictures in person.

On m’a souvent demandé ce que je voulais exprimer dans ma peinture et comment je définissais ma pratique de cet art. A cette question, je voudrais commencer par dire que parmi tous les arts plastiques, j’ai choisi, depuis près de 30 ans maintenant, la peinture à l’huile comme mode d’expression pour ses qualités picturales évidentes (beauté et variété des pigments) et les possibilités qu’elle offre notamment en jouant sur les temps de séchage des différentes couches superposées. Ainsi la 4ème ou la 5^ème couche met en valeur les précédentes et permet tel ou tel effet de matière (le rendu d’un nuage vaporeux, le prisme de la lumière à travers l’eau etc…)

Ma peinture c’est d’abord et avant toute chose un souci permanent de l’esthétique et de la beauté pour elle-même ; de moyen, la peinture devient sujet dans le but de traduire la beauté des choses qui nous entourent qu’elles soient réelles ou non, figuratives ou abstraites. Je ne peux concevoir de réaliser un tableau qui ne soit pas agréable à regarder ; c’est plus qu’un préalable incontournable, il s’agit de montrer (ou d’essayer de montrer à tout le moins) la beauté à travers le sujet traité. En cela, ma peinture rejoint ma quête spirituelle de recherche de justesse et d’harmonie. La beauté est en chaque chose, à nous de savoir la capter ; à moi de la retranscrire du mieux possible sur mes toiles.
J’ai tout d’abord fait mes classes avec la peinture figurative puis me suis tourné vers l’abstrait naturellement en étant étonné d’y trouver les mêmes repères, les mêmes critères, les mêmes harmonies. Les couleurs sont également une donnée fondamentale de ma peinture. La peinture n’est elle pas l’art des couleurs par excellence ? Dans aucun autre art, les couleurs n’ont une place aussi centrale. C’est aussi une des raisons qui m’a fait adopter les pigments à l’huile.

Les sujets me viennent naturellement sans grande recherche intellectuelle mais plutôt par des visions, des flashs sans trop chercher à comprendre. La beauté étant en toute chose, tout sujet est « bon » à prendre. Ma peinture n’est pas intellectuelle, comment pourrait elle l’être d’ailleurs ? En faisant appel à l’œil et au coeur du spectateur, elle doit l’apprivoiser, le faire voyager ; l’appel aux sens et à la sensualité ne peut être exclu. A partir de ces visions, je m’astreints à les reproduire le plus fidèlement possible sur les toiles. Je ne suis néanmoins pas opposé aux commandes personnalisées y compris lorsque des contraintes y sont attachées (gamme de couleur, format, sujet, harmonie avec la décoration intérieure …) ; je considère que la communication est non seulement nécessaire entre le peintre et le Commanditaire/spectateur mais est source de communion et d’enrichissement pour ma peinture. Mes toiles ne sont pas faites pour être vue rapidement comme dans les musées mais doivent pouvoir vivre avec le temps, changer avec la lumière extérieure (d’où la présence de plusieurs couches successives et des effets de matière qui s’en suivent), l’heure de la journée ou l’ambiance du domicile.

Lorsque je suis mécontent du résultat d’une peinture, la remise en cause est immédiate et sans pitié ; il s’agit de moi et si le résultat n’est pas beau; c’est parce que ma personne n’est pas suffisamment harmonieuse et ouverte à la beauté qui nous entoure. De la main ou l’esprit lequel des deux a t’il échoué ? peu importe, physique ou spirituel, les deux sont des transformateurs.
Ainsi j’aime à dire aux gens qui me font l’honneur de regarder mes toiles : ne cherchez pas de réponse à vos questions mais laissez vous guider par la toile et si le guide n’est pas bon, quittez le. Point n’est besoin d’explication littéraire ; pourquoi ajouter un autre vecteur de communication à la peinture puisque celle-ci est déjà un langage autonome et indépendant ? C’est aussi une des raisons d’être de la recherche de la beauté : pour toucher le plus grand nombre d’emblée.

Ces quelques lignes devraient suffire, je pense, à éclairer ceux et celles qui cherchent à mieux connaître ma peinture mais ne remplacera pas le spectacle des toiles qui s’offrent à notre regard.

Christophe Cusson started oil painting at the age of nine. From 1971 to 1979, he studied Fine Arts at l’Ecole Martenot in Paris, where he studied a variety of styles (charcoal, red chalk, oil painting, watercolour, modelling…). In 1981, he was asked to show his art at a competition reserved for the best young artists in France. He then went on to study static and dynamic anatomy under Madame Siegfried (1979-1981) and painted in a private studio with Fabienne Ternat-Garin (1981-1984). This is where his passion for oil painting was confirmed. Since then, he hasn’t stopped working to expand his knowledge of this art, and to express the diversity of his inspirations through a style that is constantly evolving.
From 1985 to 1993, he participated in a number of competitions which he chose for their rigorous selection committees. He was presented with awards at several of these competitions. Some notable exhibitions include the following:

He also held solo exhibitions at “La Tonnelle” at Boulogne Billancourt in 1985, and group exhibitions: “Les passeurs de lumière” at the Centre La Montgolfière at Vaucresson in 1990, which allowed him to have direct contact with the public while presenting many of his works. Since 2003, Christophe Cusson has been a member of the Association Atelier Art Europe in Levallois, where he has his studio. In 2004 and 2005, he opened the doors of his studio where he presented his last creation, which proved to be a great success. His style is pure and rich, the product of hard work begun at a young age. At forty-three, Christophe Cusson produces and sells his works across all the continents, from the United States to Japan, captivating audiences with his intimate style and his definitive appreciation of the aesthetics of shape, line and colour.
